About the Owner
Carol A. Giles, MPH, CIH is an ABIH-Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), with over 20 years of expertise in anticipating, evaluating and controlling chemical, biological, ergonomic, and lab hazards.
She started as a registered medical technologist at a large teaching hospital in Chicago where she represented her lab on the clinical lab safety committee. She was promoted to Senior Safety Officer readying the hospital for a JCAH(O) audit. She managed hazardous chemical waste, requisition to disposal--decreasing waste and costs by 33% over 2 years--and improved biohazardous waste quality assurance. She planned a lab safety seminars program and expo for 300 personnel, performed life safety duties, and escorted external inspectors.
Giles finished her Masters in Public Health (MPH) and went to work with CIH supervision at an international oil corporation. Giles was a corporate IH for 11 manufacturing plants, an R&D center, and two chemical plants. She trained sampling personnel, surveyed, coordinated IH activities with on-site staff, and gained experience with noise & hearing conservation, ventilation, confined space entry, and PPE. She passed both CIH exams in 1989 maintaining continuous certification since.
She worked at a large US Dept. of Energy R&D facility near Chicago as a corporate IH and Ergonomics Program Manager for 15 years until 2006, learning about federal government contracting and additional regulations for nuclear and science facilities. She oversaw IH aspects of water tower lead-based paint rehab and other construction projects, inspected and surveyed operations, investigated complaints, illness/injuries, and responded to emergencies. She recommended controls for many types of hazards, developed policies and their ergonomics program, and developed and planned a week-long event for the lab with all Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) sections participating.
In NJ, she started her own firm, mostly subcontracting to other firms for chemical hygiene and training. She moved back to Chicago in summer 2008. She was hired as EHS Officer for a small pre-clincal animal research lab, performed a gap analysis, and developed several new programs.
Giles develops and manages ESH and training programs (using instructional design). She is excellent at audits and investigations. She investigates accidents, injuries, illnesses, & complaints; and assesses potential hazards for operations, labs, hospitals, research, construction, demolition and dismantlement, nuclear, and manufacturing.
Carol Giles provides cost-effective recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards and exposures to them, sometimes increasing efficiency.
She is technical, analytical, outgoing and and an enthusiastic teacher.
She would like to help you with your ESH issues.
